# Child Development Training for ECE Providers

## Child Development training builds the research‑based understanding of how children grow and learn from birth through age 5 — the foundational knowledge that informs every aspect of high‑quality early childhood practice.

## What is Child Development training?

Child Development (CDA Competency Area VIII) is the cross‑cutting knowledge base that connects all eight CDA competency areas. It covers principles of child development across cognitive, social‑emotional, language, and physical domains, with particular depth on the birth‑to‑five window when brain development is most rapid and most responsive to quality caregiving and educational experiences.

Training in this area addresses topics such as developmental milestones by age group, brain development and early learning science, attachment theory and its implications for responsive caregiving, the impact of adverse childhood experiences on development, supporting children with developmental delays or disabilities, and applying developmental knowledge to daily teaching decisions. Child Development is foundational knowledge required by virtually every state licensing authority and is a qualifying CE category in states across the country.

## Frequently asked questions

What is Child Development training for ECE providers?

Child Development (CDA VIII) training builds educators’ understanding of how children grow and learn from birth through age 5. It covers developmental milestones, brain development science, attachment theory, adverse childhood experiences, and supporting children with developmental delays — the foundational knowledge that informs all eight CDA competency areas.

Does Child Development training count toward state CE requirements?

Yes, in most states. Child growth and development is one of the most universally recognized CE categories across state childcare licensing systems. Select your state from the list above to see specific hour requirements and qualifying topics.

What topics are covered in brightwheel’s Child Development courses?

Brightwheel’s CDA VIII courses cover developmental milestones from birth through age 5, brain development and early learning science, attachment and bonding, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma‑informed practice, developmental screening and early intervention, and supporting children with disabilities and special needs in inclusive settings. All courses are 1 hour, self‑paced, and IACET‑accredited.

Are brightwheel Child Development courses accepted in my state?

Brightwheel Professional Development is currently accepted in 49 states. Child Development is a qualifying CE topic in virtually every state. Select your state from the list above to confirm acceptance and see specific hour requirements.

Why is Child Development considered the foundational CDA competency area?

CDA VIII is the knowledge base that gives all other competency areas meaning. Understanding how children develop — cognitively, emotionally, physically, and linguistically — is what allows educators to apply appropriate guidance strategies, design effective learning environments, communicate meaningfully with families, and recognize when a child may need additional support. It is the “why” behind everything else educators do.
