# Safe and Healthy Environment Training for ECE Providers

## Safe and Healthy Environment training prepares early childhood educators to create and maintain safe, healthy, and nurturing environments that protect children’s physical wellbeing and support healthy development.

## What is Safe and Healthy Environment training?

Safe and Healthy Environment (CDA Competency Area I) covers the knowledge and skills educators need to prevent accidents and injuries, maintain health and sanitation standards, respond to emergencies, and design physical spaces that are developmentally appropriate and free from hazards. It is one of the eight core CDA competency areas recognized by state childcare licensing authorities across the US.

Training in this area addresses topics such as nutrition and meal service, infectious disease prevention, emergency and disaster preparedness, safe sleep practices for infants, medication administration, and classroom setup that supports physical exploration and gross motor development. Most states explicitly require training in health and safety as part of annual continuing education for licensed childcare staff.
