Oates Elem Pre-K is a public pre-kindergarten program serving the parents and families of Houston. As a pre-k, Oates Elem Pre-K provides a structured, stable learning environment that replicates the best of the formal school years ahead and is hosted on the same campus where they may even be able to attend kindergarten once they graduate pre-k. Pre-k provides more resources and opportunities for students to explore the world around them, as well as a bevy of peers and socialization opportunities. With a full-time schedule, as well, Oates Elem Pre-K allows parents to work and assume other responsibilities while their children are playing and learning amongst their peers. Children have the opportunity to get used to the natural rhythms of a daily structured learning environment with a full-time schedule, which can help smooth the transition into kindergarten and future education. The full-time schedule allows plenty of opportunities for creativity and fun, too, as the day always feels too short when you’re having fun! Oates Elem Pre-K teaches a play-based curriculum that values self-directed, interactive, intuitive learning by and for children. Students at play-based schools get the opportunity to participate in theme-based, hands-on activities with staff that facilitate and direct the discovery process. Through these hands-on activities, students develop social, cognitive and emotional skills built through the cooperation process with their peers. A play-based approach also can spark a love of learning that will be foundational for students throughout their early years of formal school.
