Smaller Scholars is a center-based child care and early education facility serving the students and families of Houston! As a center, Smaller Scholars provides a school-like learning and enrichment environment that gives students a taste of what they’ll experience at more formal school in the years to come. Students at Smaller Scholars are provided the socialization opportunities that come with peers of similar ages, the enrichment opportunities that come with a center’s resources and structure, and the community that comes with experienced staff. For Houston parents, as well, the full-time schedule at Smaller Scholars can be exactly what they need. Full-time gives students the time to really gain from the best of what early education can be - learning with peers, exploring with teachers and finding something new to explore every day. The full-time schedule at Smaller Scholars creates a real community for families outside of the home and sets up students well for tackling education in the years ahead. In addition, Smaller Scholars teaches a mixed-age curriculum that facilities peer learning and communal growth. In a mixed-age classroom like at Smaller Scholars, students receive open-ended, stimulating activities and are encouraged to move at their own pace. Younger students receive help and encouragement from older students, boosting their confidence and self-esteem, and older students get to lend a helping hand, teaching empathy and the joy of giving. Mixed-age learning replicates the best of a family or neighborhood group structure as children socialize with peers a little ahead or a little behind their own development path.
