Philadelphia, PA Preschools, Daycare & Child Care

Philadelphia has a great selection of daycares, child care centers and preschools. Whether you're looking for bi-lingual daycares in South Philadelphia or affordable preschools in Fishtown, browse the options below to find the best Philly schools near you. In general, Philadelphia parents have two options for a child care setting: care based in a family home or care in a center-based environment. Both have advantages, with strong reasons to choose either, and much of how parents further narrow their child care options is based on which setting they think fits their family the best. In-home care most closely resembles the family home environment that a child is most familiar with. In-home providers offer child care out of their own personal homes and therefore have smaller, more intimate environments; overall group sizes are modest, and provider staff is also small, sometimes even just the provider her or himself. In-home care is fully licensed and regulated, however, and in-home providers abide by strict standards of safety and cleanliness. In-home is often a popular choice for families with children transitioning out of the family home for the first time, often on the younger side, and not quite ready for the more structured day than a center-based environment might provide. Center-based care more closely resembles what parents think of when they think of a preschool, although center-based care comes in a wide variety of pedagogies, learning approaches and hosts a wide variety of ages as well. Center-based care is popular with families looking for a more structured routine, larger environments, and more specific pedagogies (which include learning philosophies like Montessori or Reggio Emilia or development approaches like play-based, arts-based, or mixed-age learning). Child care centers can often be sole proprietors, like in-home care, but also can be a part of larger, national chains like Bright Horizons or The Goddard School or be a part of local Philadelphia or Pennsylvania-based chains like Brightside Academy. Centers are almost always larger environments than in-home care, which can be an advantage for families looking for broader socialization for their children or to join a strong, active community of like-minded families. Outside of choosing the setting that feels most appropriate for your child, other key considerations in the child care search are age, hours, schedule, curriculum and convenience. Convenience usually comes down to location - how close to home, work, or commute routes are the options in your area. As a dense city, Philadelphia provides child care options close by; most neighborhoods from Center City outwards have a variety of child care providers to choose from. Schedule and hours are critical to know, though, as they can further narrow your options with child care. Most providers offer some type of full-time or part-time care, but what hours that means exactly can vary; it’s also important to check as well with providers on late pickup policies. While it’s rarer, do consider schedule options like drop-in or even 24-hour care, if you can find them and have non-traditional working hours or special considerations. Drop-in care is the most flexible type of care, which can be fantastic for families looking for maximum flexibility - or have had something fall through at their usual provider and need some immediate child care. 24-hour care doesn’t actually mean being separated from your child for a full day, but means overnight hours for parents on night shifts; this type of care is uncommon but can be available. When considering what ages a provider welcomes at their center or home, consider not just whether your child fits the provider age range now, but consider what that means for your child’s playmates and peers; some parents prefer an environment that skews older, where children can learn & grow with older children, whereas other parents prefer the opposite. Larger providers will segment children into programs or groups, too, so your child’s peer set will be often more or less similar in age depending on the size of the overall setting as well. Cost is also a key consideration for families. For parents of older children, the city of Philadelphia provides free, quality pre-K programs for children aged 3 and 4 through the PHLpreK program: http://www.phlprek.org/phlprek/. The PHLpreK program is funded with local dollars and free for residents of Philadelphia with 3 and 4 years olds for the traditional school day of 5.5 hours across the traditional school calendar. Because PHLprek affiliates with local child care providers, though, and does not run preschool programs itself, many partner providers will have extended hours or days longer than the traditional school year - for which the provider will bill parents separately. There are approximately 130 providers affiliated with PHLprek, including Brightside Academy: https://mybrightwheel.com/search/philadelphia/brightside-academy-early-care-education-5052, Children’s Playhouse: https://mybrightwheel.com/search/philadelphia/childrens-playhouse-newbold-4231, Little Learner’s Literacy Academy: https://mybrightwheel.com/search/philadelphia/little-learners-literacy-academy-4136, Monique Williams Family Child Care Home: https://mybrightwheel.com/search/philadelphia/monique-williams-family-child-care-home-4855 and many more. As a parent, you can expect that a PHLprek partner will provide a safe, clean classroom environment with professional trained staff and teachers, a curriculum based on play and exposing children to new challenges, and a transitional plan for kindergarten enrollment and continued development. PHLprek programs are fairly evenly distributed across the city, although in total they represent less than ten percent of the total available child care options in Philadelphia - and there are many quality providers that are not affiliated with the program. PHLprek is also not the only no-cost option for Philadelphia parents, too, and Philadelphia also boasts the Early Learning Resource Center (ELRC): http://www.phlprek.org/early-learning-resource-center/ that subsizides child care costs for working parents with certain income qualifications, Early Head Start: http://www.phlprek.org/early-head-start which provides free care for eligible families with children under 3, and Head Start: http://www.phlprek.org/head-start/ which provides free care for eligible families with children aged 3 to 5. Most of those options work with a variety of different child care providers, and provides families with a solid amount of options in their neighborhoods. When you’re evaluating the health & safety of a child care provider in Philadelphia, do know that you will be looking at a different type of license depending on what setting that provider hosts care in. Family child care businesses (which are often called in-home care providers) are required in Philadelphia to apply for and hold a child care facility license from the city. These businesses are also limited in capacity differently based on where in the city they are; family child care businesses in the northeast of the city are capped at four children maximum, while most of the rest of the city is capped at a six child maximum. Commercial child care businesses (which are often called center-based providers) are regulated through the state of Pennsylvania, which grants certificates for operation. Both types of providers, though, have to pass city-based regulations on zoning, fire safety and more.
