Michigan’s ECSQ: The official early learning standards framework
Michigan’s early learning standards are organized under the Early Childhood Standards of Quality for Birth to Kindergarten (ECSQ B-K), 2022 revision, administered by the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP). ECSQ applies to licensed childcare centers, family childcare homes, Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) participants, and Head Start programs serving children from birth through kindergarten entry.
Michigan’s ECSQ defines developmental expectations across all 8 domains and guides curriculum planning, developmental assessment, and program quality statewide. Programs can view current guidance at the MiLEAP ECSQ page.
Michigan’s QRIS is called Great Start to Quality, administered by MiLEAP. Great Start to Quality connects families to quality programs and supports providers through 10 Resource Centers across the state. Programs are evaluated on curriculum, learning environment, family engagement, staff qualifications, and administration. Using a research-based curriculum aligned to Michigan’s ECSQ supports higher Great Start to Quality ratings.

How Experience Curriculum aligns to Michigan’s ECSQ
Experience Curriculum is formally aligned to Michigan’s ECSQ across all three age bands — Baby (birth to 18 months), Toddler (18 to 36 months), and Preschool (3 to 5 years) — and all 8 developmental domains. The Michigan ECSQ Alignment PDF documents how every Experience Curriculum activity and skill maps to a specific ECSQ indicator.
For Michigan programs using brightwheel, developmental observations can be logged directly in the app during or after activities, automatically building each child’s portfolio and supporting Great Start to Quality curriculum documentation requirements.
The Michigan ECSQ Alignment PDF is a free resource documenting how every Experience Curriculum activity maps to Michigan’s ECSQ indicators — suitable for QRIS review submissions and licensing documentation.
