Affordable & Compatible Devices for brightwheel

Devices

There’s no denying the rapid influx of technology in our world–screens and devices have invaded every corner of our lives whether we like it or not. The preschool classroom included. According to a 2015 Northwestern University survey, more than half of all preschool teachers use tablets in the classroom, a number that doubled from a survey done just two years prior.

But with so many choices out there, which are the best, affordable devices for use in a preschool, child care, or camp setting? We’ve done some research and internal testing here at brightwheel, and have a few recommendations for both tablets and mobile devices that are brightwheel compatible.

Aside from price, the most important feature criteria to consider include:

  • Screen size vs. mobility (i.e. tablet vs. mobile phone)
  • Operating system: Check the Apple app store or Google Play store to see the versions we support
  • Memory space: not that brightwheel does NOT store images and videos on your device in order to save space
  • Camera quality: we recommend a minimum of 5MP

Please note that brightwheel is not compatible with Windows devices and not optimized for Kindle.

Tablets:

Tablets are a great choice, especially when used as a check-in kiosk. A few tablets we recommend:

Lenovo Tab 10

Our top recommended choice at $100, also has 10 hours of battery life.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A

This tablet has average handle and UI with an 5MP camera. Offered around $115.

Asus Zenpad

This is a solid choice from Asus. 5 MP camera; Can find for about $130, and some sales for less than $100.

iPad Mini

These retina display devices have super 8 MP cameras and are super compact; Pretty pricey in the $400-$600 range depending on the model.

Mobile Devices:

Although a lot of schools do lean towards tablets, we often recommend mobile devices for in-class use because you can easily use brightwheel and quickly put it away. In this case, you wouldn’t actually need to use the phone functionality; you can just put it on wi-fi.

For more affordable options, these are our Android phone recommendation, balancing quality and cost:

Motorola Moto G Smartphone

This one handles quite well with solid UI. 5 MP camera, can find for less than $100.

BLU R1 HD

A real bargain, but a solid camera. Priced at less than $80.

iPod Touch

A popular choice in the classroom for Apple fans, the 8 MP camera is amazing. Options ranging from 16 to 128 GB, with the latest models priced between $199 and $299.

This would also be a good time to mention that here at brightwheel we have worked tirelessly to build a platform that makes teachers lives easier, streamlining their processes, allowing them more time to engage with kids.
